Those who wish to avoid additives in their food may choose to shop and eat organic foods only. There are many issues for choosing to 'go organic' and additives found in processed food is just one of them.
Another of these reasons may be climate change. Many people are leaving the car at home and walking to the shop instead, and that's great, but are we also thinking about the effect of what we are buying on the environment around us? Farming is another major link to the amount of emission such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane that is being released into the atmosphere. Organic farms have been found to use 50% less energy than non-organic farms.
Animal welfare is a big reason to go organic. Buying organic meat ensures that the animal has had a happy and stress-free life, not only will it have lived 'free range' but it will have had access to good living conditions and food quality and well as ensuring it was not subjected to hormone and antibiotic treatments. It even ensures that the animal is transported and slaughtered humanly.
Eating organic food that has not been subjected to needless chemical additives is not only better for you but also for the environment. Since pesticides were introduced to farming there has been a 95% decrease in the number of birds found on farmland. An organic farmer will fertilize his crops by rotating the soil, using composted manure and planting crops which introduce nitrogen into the soil naturally.
It is well known that antibiotics are becoming more effective when we need them to treat illness. It is one concern that the reason for this is due to residual antibiotics in the food we eat. More than half of the antibiotic use in the UK is down to the use in farm animals to suppress infectious diseases that are rife with intensive farming. These are animals that ultimately end up on our plate.
